What Makes a Good Photo Better With Black and White?
I LOVE black and white photos! I do this pretty much every time I edit. But what makes a photo better with black and white?
1. IT HAS CONTRAST
A good black and white photo is already filled with high contrast between dark and light. You really want your subject to be isolated.
2. IT HAS MOTION
Slowing down your shutter speed will make you have some motion in your photo
3. IT HAS A SIMPLE STORY THAT IS NOT TOO BUSY
My daughter just opened up the curtain just enough to reveal her face.
The swings are against a simple white sky. So my subjects stick out.
3. IT HAS TEXTURE
I took this one at someone's beach house. I loved the way the shadows played on the porch.
Here is another one of the scene. Havin the color version would ruin what I was trying to do! There were be too much color to let your eyes focus on one thing!
4. IT SHOWS A MOOD
There is a wine glass player in my hometown that has been there for over 25 years, playing music on the street- talk about dedication!
When you look at this photo, you just see him. You don't see the guy filming him with his iphone, you don't see the busy background. You just focus on his art.
Here is another musician in my hometown. It makes me think that it was was taken at night. But it really taken in the middle of the day!
This was only lit by one lamp near the bookshelf! I just love my son's and my husband's hands on the piano!
