20+ Family Portrait Pose Ideas

I know that I struggle with poses while I'm working. It took me a LONG time to get comfortable to direct a family enough in a short amount of time so that I could produce fast images.

Now I am at the point where I can shoot 200+ images in 30 minutes. I try to not to go past 30 mins for a family with children. It's just TOO long for their little attention spans. Kids only have a small window of time where they are happy and I believe that going over 30 mins is really tough on kids.

Therefore, I have developed a system to get as many photos as possible in a short amount of time.

I always start with the kids first. I do one to two poses each. I love when they bring props that show their personality! Have them do very simple poses that are comfortable for them to be in. The worst is when you are trying to hyper-pose a child- they just start to get grumpy!

I let some moments happen naturally. If I see the kids sitting or standing a certain way with out me directing them- then I take a picture of it!

I always leave room for just mom and dad! These are always my favorites!

I love finding a clearing or a place to sit. If you don't have a cool staircase, then bring a blanket or a bench to sit on. I love how they brought these letters from church! So creative!

Walking back and then walking forward is such a simple task!

Always find a place that can be shot without having to walk a long time. All of these different scenes were taken very close to each other. Remember, the less time between sets, the more pictures!

I hope this helps you visualize some pose ideas!
